Main Page error reports

To report an error in content currently or imminently on the Main Page, use the appropriate section below.

  • Where is the error? An exact quotation of the text in question helps.
  • Offer a correction if possible.
  • References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error.
  • Time zones. The Main Page runs on Coordinated Universal Time (UTC, currently 16:21 on 26 March 2025) and is not adjusted to your local time zone.
  • Can you resolve the problem yourself? If the error lies primarily in the content of an article linked from the Main Page, fix the problem there before reporting it here. Text on the Main Page generally defers to the articles with bolded links. Upcoming content on the Main Page is usually only protected from editing beginning 24 hours before its scheduled appearance. Before that period, you can be bold and fix any issues yourself.
  • Do not use {{edit fully-protected}} on this page, which will not get a faster response. It is unnecessary, because this page is not protected, and causes display problems. (See the bottom of this revision for an example.)
  • No chit-chat. Lengthy discussions should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere, such as the talk page of the relevant article or project.
  • Respect other editors. Another user wrote the text you want changed, or reported an issue they see in something you wrote. Everyone's goal should be producing the best Main Page possible. The compressed time frame of the Main Page means sometimes action must be taken before there has been time for everyone to comment. Be civil to fellow users.
  • Reports are removed when resolved. Once an error has been addressed or determined not to be an error, or the item has been rotated off the Main Page, the report will be removed from this page. Check the revision history for a record of any discussion or action taken; no archives are kept.

The hook says 'that when the crime of mugging gained attention in the UK, one book argued that there was no crime as such?' The original formulation of the hook, as seen on the Talk:Mugging#Did you know nomination article talk page, was 'that when the crime of mugging gained attention in the UK, one book argued that there was no such crime'. This is not the same claim. The original formulation can still be accepted as a technically correct summary of the actual fact, which the article body renders with the clause 'that mugging was not defined in law or distinct from existing crimes'. On the contrary, the former claim sounds as if it is being alleged that there is 'no crime as such' when mugging is committed, i.e. that mugging is actually legal. Even the original formulation was somewhat clickbaity by allowing, at first sight, the false interpretation that mugging itself does not exist - the more adequate rendering 'that mugging was not defined in law or distinct from existing crimes' would hardly have gained as much attention and clicks - but the current formulation on the main page is just flat out wrong.--62.73.72.3 (talk) 06:29, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, we struggled with exactly this at Wikipedia_talk:Did_you_know#Queue_5_(26_March_00:00), as multiple editors (including myself) really did not like the original formulation "no such crime" either. The solution suggested by IP: "that mugging was not distinct from existing crimes?" is very clear and would be my preference for a fix. Cielquiparle (talk) 06:37, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

  • "... that weightlifter Mattie Sasser switched her nationality twice before qualifying for the Marshall Islands at the 2024 Summer Olympics?" Not true. She had dual nationality, so she first competed for the one, and then for the other. That's not switching twice, that's switching once. Fram (talk) 08:57, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Courtesy pings to @Arconning, Gonzo fan2007, and Tarlby:. For now, I cut 'twice'.--Launchballer 09:36, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
@Launchballer: I wikilinked nationality to Sporting nationality, for an athlete to compete for a country there would be around a two year waiting period before representing said country. Sasser held dual citizenship though could only have one when representing a nation in international sport, therefore she technically had to switch her nationality twice. Arconning (talk) 09:40, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
She competed for the US, and then she competed for the Marshall Islands. Which other one did she compete for? Fram (talk) 10:24, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
This is what the source, Inside the Games, says: Sasser - who lifted for the Marshall Islands at Rio 2016 and switched nationality to win medals for the US and has now changed back again - lifted in the 59 kilograms B Group and put herself in a great position for Paris 2024 by making 94-120-214. Cielquiparle (talk) 11:08, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks. Fram (talk) 11:27, 26 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
I've altered the article text a bit to make it clearer that she was initially on the Marshall Islands team in 2016, before attempting to qualify under the US banner in 2020 and then back to Marshall Islands this time. Also clarified sporting nationality for the hook with a link, and reinstated "twice" as I think that's a legitimate way to describe a Marshall Islands -> USA -> Marshall Islands double switcheroo? Does today's feature article have a page with an obscene title? What if children click on the main page? An editor from Mars (talk) 04:07, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]

They'd probably find out about the existence of the word sooner or later, but in any case they probably don't know what it means. I don't see a concern. Cremastra (talk) 21:55, 21 March 2025 (UTC)[reply]
